Project Saathi Chandigarh: Student Mental Health Initiative 2026

Project Saathi

Chandigarh Administration, in collaboration with the Chandigarh Citizens Foundation (CCF) and the UT Department of School Education, has launched Project Saathi to address rising mental health concerns among students in government schools. The inauguration took place on January 28, 2026, with officials emphasizing the importance of emotional and psychological well-being in young learners.

Objective of the Project

Project Saathi aims to provide holistic mental health support to students of Classes 7, 8, 9, and 11 across select government schools. The initiative helps students cope with academic pressure, social stress, peer pressure, and other emotional challenges.

Officials highlighted that rising use of mobile phones and social media, along with family and academic pressures, has increased the need for structured mental health programs in schools.

How Project Saathi Works

  • Counselling and Support: Trained counsellors and teachers identify students showing signs of emotional distress.
  • Workshops and Training: The programme conducts sessions on life skills, stress management, mindfulness, yoga, and meditation for students, and trains teachers to support student well-being.
  • Creative and Group Activities: Activities like art therapy, role-playing, and group discussions help students express themselves and build confidence.
  • Professional Referrals: The programme refers students who need further support to mental health professionals.

The pilot programme is currently implemented in seven government schools, with plans to expand based on its impact.

Impact and Future Prospects

Project Saathi represents a proactive approach to mental health in schools, focusing on prevention, awareness, and early intervention. By combining emotional, social, and physical wellness programs, the initiative aims to create a supportive environment for students. Officials are optimistic that this project will serve as a model for other schools and educational institutions in Chandigarh and beyond.
