Art enthusiasts in the city are enjoying a rare cultural experience as the M.S. Randhawa Art Festival unfolds at Punjab Kala Bhawan, Sector 16, Chandigarh. The exhibition brings together an exceptional collection of vintage and historic paintings, some dating back nearly three decades, which curators have carefully preserved in official archives for years.
Hosted at the Art Gallery of Punjab Kala Bhawan, the exhibition has attracted artists, art students, collectors, and culture lovers from across Punjab and neighbouring states. Organisers are showcasing many of the artworks publicly after a long gap, making the event both rare and significant.
Celebrating Punjab’s Artistic Heritage at Art Festival
The exhibition showcases Punjab’s rich artistic legacy through works created by some of the state’s most respected and influential artists. Paintings by Dr. M.S. Randhawa, Shiv Kumar Batalvi, Gurcharan Singh, Surjeet Paatar, and several other renowned artists form the core of the collection. These figures played a crucial role in shaping Punjab’s cultural and artistic identity.
Artists created several of the displayed works decades ago, while others completed them later. Each piece carries immense historical, cultural, and artistic value. Notably, some artists whose works feature in the exhibition are no longer alive, turning these paintings into irreplaceable pieces of history.
Over 60 Artworks and Rare Photographs on Display
Organised under the M.S. Randhawa Art Festival, the exhibition features:
- 63 artworks by nearly 50 renowned artists
- 20 rare photographs by acclaimed photographer Dev Inder
Experts believe the current market value of several paintings could run into crores, highlighting the importance of preserving and publicly showcasing these artworks.
A Valuable Learning Platform for Young Artists
Speaking about the exhibition, Gurdeep Dhiman, Chairman of the Punjab Lalit Kala Akademi, said curators have preserved these artworks with great care over the years. He added that the exhibition provides a unique learning opportunity for young and emerging artists, allowing them to study fine details, techniques, and artistic depth rarely seen in contemporary works.
