Sainik School in Chandigarh Nears Final Approval

Sainik School

Chandigarh has moved a step closer to establishing its first Sainik School after Defence Minister Rajnath Singh assured Punjab Governor and UT Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria that the proposal would receive approval.

Kataria met the Defence Minister in New Delhi and strongly advocated for the project. He emphasized that setting up a Sainik School in Chandigarh would actively promote discipline, leadership skills, and a spirit of national service among the youth.

School to Come Up at GMSSS-23 Campus

Authorities have proposed establishing the Sainik School on the 16-acre campus of Government Model Senior Secondary School (GMSSS) in Sector 23. The initiative aims to utilize the existing infrastructure while upgrading facilities to meet Sainik School standards.

Ministry Evaluates Proposals Under Partnership Model

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) is currently reviewing applications from across the country to set up new Sainik Schools under the partnership model. Officials will issue approval letters to selected institutions after completing a comprehensive scrutiny process.

Evaluation Committee Reviews Infrastructure

An Evaluation Committee visited GMSSS-23A on November 21, 2025, to assess the proposal. The Deputy Commissioner chaired the panel, while the Principal of Sainik School Kunjpura and the Principal of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya served as members.

The committee carefully examined the school’s infrastructure, academic preparedness, mess and kitchen facilities, and administrative arrangements. Officials confirmed that the institution submitted all required documents and met the prescribed criteria. UT Education Secretary Prerna Puri stated that the proposal now awaits final approval from the Sainik Schools Society under the Ministry of Defence.

Proposal Initiated in June 2025

Authorities initiated the project in June 2025 by forming a committee to study its feasibility. The panel reviewed the policy guidelines of the Sainik Schools Society and visited PPP-model schools in Nalagarh and Kurukshetra to understand operational benchmarks.

Application Submitted in July 2025

The Principal of GMSSS-23 completed the online application on July 11, 2025, along with the registration fee. The school formally submitted the proposal on July 12.

Admissions Through National Entrance Exam

Once approved, the school will admit students to Classes VI and IX through the All-India Sainik Schools Entrance Examination conducted by the National Testing Agency, ensuring a merit-based and transparent selection process.
